Magical Realism: 2-day winter workshop

Like fairytales for grown-ups, anything's possible in magical realism. Discover the genre's background and possibilities, some points of entry, and start writing your own magical realist pieces.

Some wonderfully proactive students really wanted the Magical Realism workshop to run this summer and were gutted it didn't make the top five, so they asked if they could rally up the minimum number and have it in the winter instead. And of course I said "Hurrah yes!" So this is a bonus workshop, to brighten us up with magical realism's richness in the depths of winter.

The workshop is now full, so I'm taking names for the waiting list. You can also join the mailing list if you'd like first dibs on future workshops and courses.

Workshop overview

On the first morning, you値l browse examples and excerpts of magical realist books, from classic Latin-American examples to contemporary borrowing of the genre, and use those to identify its core features. You値l then use a bundle of different creative strategies to create the heaps of ideas that magical realism wants.

On the second morning, you値l take several of Saturday痴 ideas and try them out as possible stories, again using a range of strategies. You値l then pick a setting and develop it to make it as rich as possible. Finally, you値l pick one central story to embed in your setting and start writing it, feeding in your other ideas freely.

By the end of the workshop, you値l have a sound understanding of magical realism痴 features and possibilities, 6 new strategies to generate ideas and a sheaf of ideas, 5 approaches for turning ideas into magical realist stories, a rich setting, and the start of your own magical realist story.
